The more the merrier!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DFO\u2019s<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fo\/b5ykahli33lfc0cr59tf6\/ALtz7H5ALZiGYgNz--rQD7g?rlkey=kykfm3ru9pxfwk0t90udg0rl2&amp;e=1&amp;st=p75oevjd&amp;dl=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2026 Draft Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP) for Pacific Herring<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is now out and <strong>the public need to get their recommendations to them by November 17th<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The Cole\u2019s notes are that\u00a0<strong>DFO is recommending a harvest of up to\u00a014,385 tons in the Strait of Georgia<\/strong> which is 14% of their estimated biomass of 102,791 tons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Excerpt from the IFMP:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>SOG: Assessment information for the Strait of Georgia is presented using the updated SISCAH\u00a0modelling framework. Spawning biomass\u00a0for\u00a02026\u00a0is forecast to be\u00a0102,791 short\u00a0tons\u00a0and above\u00a0the LRP and USR reference points.\u00a0Based on a management procedure tuned to meet the\u00a0conversative objective of maintaining the stock above the LRP with a high degree (>75%) degree\u00a0of certainty, harvest rates of up to 14% will\u00a0achieve\u00a0this\u00a0objective\u00a0over the 15 year simulation\u00a0period.\u00a0Harvest options for consideration for the SOG area include TAC\u2019s up to 14,385 tons to support\u00a0harvest for FSC and commercial fisheries for Special Use, Food and Bait and roe herring.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Our recommendation is, as ever, to &#8220;pause the fishery until stocks recover in the Strait of Georgia.\u201d\u00a0<strong>If you want to provide input, write an email DIRECTLY to\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"mailto:Hong.Tjhie@dfo-mpo.gc.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Hong.Tjhie@dfo-mpo.gc.ca<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you only have five minutes, you can still get involved. Pacific Wild has prepared an easy way to provide input to DFO. Read\u00a0their <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/pacificwild\/two-weeks-to-speak-up-for-herring-submit-feedback-before-november-17?e=891b702dbe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Draft Herring Management Plan Analysis<\/a> for a summarized version of the IFMP, and respond online using their<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pacificwild.org\/action\/speak-up-for-herring-by-nov-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Herring Feedback Tool<\/a>, which provides a pre-written letter to DFO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our president, Jim Shortreed, has provided his additional analysis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;The entire stock of the Strait of Georgia will be used to calculate 14% even though 11,000 tonnes of spawners spawned south of Dodd Narrows and that area will remain closed. So they are using faulty arithmetic\u2014 calculating 14% of the estimated 100,000 thousand tonnes, but concentrating the fishing on 80 thousand tonnes. That gives a harvest rate of 16%. Not sustainable by even DFO standards.\u00a0Three large regions of BC are still labelled by DFO as low biomass low productivity.\u00a0Seiners can fish as much Food and Bait as they wish within the total annual catch.
