There was male milt in the water, there was male milt frothed up and laid on all the rockweed….but not an egg to find.

Until we found a clue, a tiny broken piece of Japanese Sargassum covered in eggs.

This morning, March 5, I’m off to try and find the Sargassum meadows and look to see if there was a spawning event. I do know that herring like to spawn on Japanese Sargassum.

The seiners have been hard at work. The acoustic surveys show about 28,000 ton return of herring so far, not the 100,000 tons predicted by DFO Science. They have taken 4400 tons and there hasn’t been any significant Spawning as yet.

Many people wonder, why harvest before the herring spawn? Also, why harvest such large amounts before the 100,000 tons of herring have actually returned?

More reports to follow. Today March 5 at 10 AM it’s a lovely day in Lambert Channel between Denman and Hornby with a few seiners searching for herring and no gillnetters.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

There was male milt in the water, there was male milt frothed up and laid on all the rockweed….but not an egg to find.
Until we found a clue, a tiny broken piece of Japanese Sargassum covered in eggs.

[1

post-979","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog
